Ashish: Fashion in Motion at London’s V&A

Delhi born designer, Ashish, is set to present a selection of his work from the last decade, as the subject of the Victoria & Albert Museum’s next Fashion in Motion, on Friday 23 October.

Four free catwalk shows will take place, against the backdrop of the V&A’s current India Festival: a series of exhibitions, displays, events and digital initiatives that will explore the rich and varied culture of South Asia, both past and present.

Ashish studied Fine Art in India before moving to London where he completed an MA at Central St. Martins. His plans to work in a Paris design studio were halted when his portfolio of work was stolen at the Gare du Nord train station, but he made a small collection that was commissioned by London store Browns. Since then, the brand has grown and is now stocked at over 50 retailers worldwide including Colette in Paris, Jeffreys in New York and Net-a-Porter.

Known for his craftsmanship and sense of humour, visitors can expect to see signature hand-beaded dresses, glitter splattered jackets, sportswear in rainbow sequins and frayed metallic denim.

β€œI’m greatly honoured to have been asked to do a retrospective show of my work as part of the Fashion in Motion series at the V&A. I will be combining work from collections from the last ten years – going through my archives has been a fun and nostalgic experience and I am looking forward to creating an exciting presentation of the best of a decade of my work,” said the designer.

Cassie Davies-Strodder, Fashion in Motion curator, added: β€œFollowing the fun and flamboyance of Ashish’s London Fashion Week show, we are delighted to welcome Ashish to the V&A as part of the Fashion in Motion series. His designs from the last ten years have celebrated subcultures, blurred boundaries between evening and daywear and made sequins β€˜urban’.”

Previous designers featured in the series include Alexander McQueen, Christian Lacroix, Erdem, Gareth Pugh, Giles Deacon, Jean Paul Gaultier, Jenny Packham, Meadham Kirchhoff, Missoni, Roksanda Ilincic, Vivienne Westwood and Yoji Yamamoto.

Admission to Fashion in Motion: ASHISH is FREE but a booking fee will apply.
