Ahead of the release of the New Haircut EP by Playing House this Friday, we’re pleased to première opening track, ‘Feel The Weight’.
Playing House are a London based trio with a penchant for blistering alt-pop tunes that pack a massive punch. The band – who formed just 10 months ago – recall the likes of Talking Heads, The Slits and Everything Everything, while citing influences as diverse as David Bowie, The Velvet Underground and Chic. Nowhere is this more evident than in the tight, bright, danceable earworm of ‘Feel The Weight’ with its focus on minimal production and big pop songwriting.
Stemming from the vibrant East London queer community, Playing House are all about subverting the norms of pop music with their honest and autobiographical writing on themes such as “birth, death, anxiety, growing and isolation.”
Title track and debut single ‘New Haircut’ – a brilliant foot-stomping introduction to the band – completes the New Haircut EP, along with closing track, ‘Grapefruit’, which seems to contain a kind of Phoenix-like optimism, a youthful refusal to accept despair as an option, even in the fiery face of things.
You can catch Playing House live at Birthdays in Dalston on April 13th for their EP release show.
New Haircut is out this Friday, April 8th.
