Perhaps the most sensational opening to a show this London Fashion Week SS17, was the unexpected arrival of a horse to the entrance of Freemasons’ Hall.
Even more surprising, the horse rider was none other than Jeff Garner, the designer of Prophetik. And so fashion week began, with Garner posing on a horse for photographers, followed by one of his graceful models wearing a beautiful vintage style ball gown, taking our breath away and stunning the crowd.
Finally, the door opens to Freemasons’ Hall and we are directed to the lounge where drinks are served and excitement is in the air, as guests’ sip champagne and chat about the upcoming presentation of Nevermore – a collection inspired by Garner’s heritage in Tennessee, as a descendant of Yorkshire settlers and Native American Cherokee.
The raven shows us how to go into the dark of our inner self and bring the light of our true self to healing and creation, cultivating renewal, recycling, and reflection. ~ Jeff Garner
It was no big surprise to see the same model from the horse, opening the show for spring/summer 2017 – a season of romantic lingerie pieces from the new intimates collection, and short minimalistic cocktail dresses in tonal shades of black, navy and grey, through to cream and white. Metallics and dip-dyed edges added detail, but the bravest and most colourful styles were saved until last – big statement ball gowns with a black wedding in mind. We especially loved the feather chokers, created from naturally shed duck feathers to symbolize those of a raven. Chokers are a repeating trend of late, and it looks like the feather variety are the ones to own this season!
With a nod to English royalty, and bordering on haute couture, the dresses seemed to be made with the most amazing precision. The first model is also the last, and as the live band, Dorado, plays on, we see Garner running to the catwalk to receive a well deserved applause.
Prophetik’s SS17 collection is definitely one of the best Garner has produced in past years. The whole fashion event was perfectly organised, with its drinks, live band and the equestrian element. We wish all fashion shows were this surprising!
