Introducing: London’s Melodic Indie Quartet, ISLAND

Oxford-formed and London-based quartet, ISLAND, have already built a fervent following on the back of their emotionally charged, math-rock tinged indie sound and engaging live show. Still unsigned, the band are making impressive progress, having sold out Scala earlier this month, the culmination of their first European tour.

The band have only been working together for just over a year, but have already released an EP and a handful of singles. Their debut EP, Girl, clocked up millions of streams with its blend of soaring guitar work and emotive lyrics and set the blueprint for what was to follow. However, each subsequent release has shown gradual evolution, whether it is the shuffling drums of the quietly anthemic, summer jam ‘Come With Me’ or powerful transitions of ‘Spotless Mind’.

The band’s most recent singles, ‘Waves’ and ‘A Place You Like’, are set to feature on their next EP, due to be released early next year, and show this continued growth. ‘Waves’ is dominated by an abrasive vocal line, which contrasts beautifully with their trademark instrumental melodies, this time supported by a rich, textured composition. ‘A Place You Like’ meanwhile is a perfect example of the bands ability to balance space and melody and their strong pop sensibilities.

Whilst ISLAND – completed by Rollo Doherty (vocals/guitar), James Wolfe (bass guitar), Jack Raeder (guitar) and Toby Richards (drums) – may be easily pigeonholed as an emerging indie band, there is a subtle maturity and depth to their work. Indeed, their sound has as much in common with math rock and ambient as it does indie rock, reflecting a wealth of influences and suggesting why their early releases have enjoyed such a strong reception. Their sound seems destined for arena sized shows and the early success ISLAND have enjoyed would suggest this is a realistic option in the not too distant future.

ISLAND will be supporting Amber Run on their UK tour early next year, and have also announced their next London show at Heaven on 3rd May 2017. Take the opportunity to catch this band in an intimate venue whilst you can, more details HERE.

A Place You Like is due for release on Beatnik Creative on 3rd February 2017 and available for pre order HERE.
