Ask the DJ: BRUNO – Top 10 Tracks That Inspired Me To Discover My Sound

Coming from a small town in northern Spain, BRUNO has quickly proven his talent by landing a spot as Resident DJ for TaoGroup in their top NYC clubs like Lavo and Marquee. His latest release is a pick-me-up summer anthem entitled ‘Villain’ – a fun track that tells a story through the eyes of a villian.

BRUNO plays with a mix of vigorous synth sounds and punching basslines in a rhythmic and funk inspired style; collaborating with Brooklyn based singer/songwriter Nathaniel, whose vocals have been featured on projects with French Montana, Wiz Khalifa, and Swizz Beats!

Daft Punk, Nile Rodgers, and Giorgio Moroder are among the few artists who have influenced BRUNO to create his own tunes, and the artist has spent unlimited hours over the last two years, perfecting his skills as a music producer and developing his unique sound. Through his influences and experiences, his vision is to reimagine the ’70s/’80s scene, bringing to life electronic music with a sentimentality of funk!

On that note, check out the Top 10 tracks that inspired Bruno to discover his sound.

1. Justice – ‘D.A.N.C.E’

“I first heard this track in 2007 and was completely hypnotized by it. At the time, I wasn’t even a DJ, but this song spoke to me to lead me to a career in music.”

2. Daft Punk – ‘Robot Rock’

“This song is timeless. The beauty of Daft Punk is that they lived ahead of their time and yet knew what would stick forever. It’s the feeling I have with everything I do – everlasting.”

3. Curtis Mayfield – ‘Superfly’

“I grew up listening to this song with my father. From the bassline to the groovy percussions, this track is a masterpiece and I hope to create something as deep in the future.”

4. Cassius – ‘1999’

“Their style of sampling music using flangers and phasers gave this dance groove I fully enjoy. After hearing this track, I wanted to learn the proper sampling methods for my own tracks.”

5. Jamiroquai – ‘Canned Heat’

“When I first heard this song, I was very impressed with the way they recreated the sound of the ‘80s within the ‘00s. It was the first time I believed that I could bring the ‘70s and ‘80s funk groove back to life in a bigger way.”

6. Lemaitre – ‘Stepping Stone (feat. Mark Johns)’

“Something about this track is extremely moving. Lemaitre does an amazing job using simple and yet complicated combinations of distorted bass and synths to balance the tone of the song. The chord progression and lyrics in the chorus remind me of independent struggles of each and every one of us and how as humans, we quickly learn to adapt and move forward.”

7. Yuksek – ‘Tonight’

“The energy is the most motivating aspect of the song. I was always inspired by high energy, fast-paced, electronic music and Yuksek does just that.”

8. Data – ‘Don’t Sing (feat. Benny Sings)’

“A part of me always appreciates indie-pop electronic music, There’s an extraordinary tension in this song that builds, releases, and revolutionizes all in four minutes.”

9. Etienne de Crecy – ‘WTF (feat. Pos & Dave)’

“The urban R&B hip hop vibe with the upbeat French house vibe gave me the idea to create a Villain.”

10. Prince – ‘I Wanna Be Your Lover’

“Prince is a pure legend. All of his tracks speak to you and your emotions. Definitely a must on my daily playlist.”
