Guillaume de Kadebostany is not one to shy away from ambitious concepts. When he started his artist project, Kadebostany, he created a conceptual ‘Republic of Kadebostany’ (of which he is, naturally, president) and his singular brand of pop music, unique visual identity, and colossal live performances have rapidly captured attention across the globe. The band’s songs have earned them over half a billion streams on YouTube, and you may be familiar with their version of ‘Crazy In Love’, which featured on the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack.
“I visualized a singular world inspired by theatre, opera, and surreal movies aesthetics. These elements lay the foundation of my new creation: DRAMA”
This year, Kadebostany take things up another notch, with the launch of a new concept: DRAMA. Our first glimpse of this chapter comes in the form of a four song EP titled DRAMA – Act 1. The collection brings in the talents of four featured artists; Irina Rimes (‘Letters From Her’), KAZKA (‘Baby I’m OK’), Kadebostany’s new live singers, Fang The Great (‘I Wasn’t Made For Love’) and Celia (‘Take It Away From Me’).
The concept was apparently the result of a revelation during a late night in Ibiza in summer 2019, one that would set the new trajectory for the band. “I visualized a singular world inspired by theatre, opera, and surreal movies aesthetics,” says Guillaume. “These elements lay the foundation of my new creation: DRAMA”
The EP’s four songs bring together a wildly varied and ever-changing sonic aesthetic, and the accompanying video (which features all four songs) is just as ambitious as the concept itself. The video introduces the viewer to a twisted theatre play in five different languages, influenced by surreal movie aesthetics. Each of the four vocalists from the EP appear, alongside Guillaume. Turkish director, Hasan Kuyucu shot the video in four days in Istanbul with a spontaneous approach, setting a context and allowing the cast to improvise.
This week, Kadebostany revealed the first part in a documentary series which sheds light on the unique world he inhabits, and explains a little more about the new ‘DRAMA’ concept. Watch This is Kadebostany above.
DRAMA Act 1 is out now.
