Random Obscurities: Johnny Depp, Shane MacGowan & ‘That Woman’s Got Me Drinking’

If I had the guts to do it
I’d take the long goodbye
Instead I’ll love her long and hard
And love her ’til I die

Well, we all have our downfalls, but unfortunately for some people the tabloids make you fodder for the masses, launching your dirty laundry in public. Johnny Depp is no exception these days, when times seems a bit hard on him. Dogs, divorces and even the death of his mother. But I won’t go any further into that. I don’t know the man, so who am I to comment on anything.

Instead I’ll use the opportunity to introduce this hidden gem from an early Johnny Depp/Shane MacGowan collaboration.

Released under Shane MacGowan & The Popes, Shane’s post-Pogues group. Johnny plays guitar on ‘That Woman’s Got Me Drinking’, a hell-raising, ramshackle, nerve-wracking tale about the downfall of a seven year long relationship, where she helped him spend his dough, only to leave him spattered out in the gutter, drunk on gin – it can be argued if the woman in question is actually the bottle – clinging on to the remains of their love.

Johnny Depp appeared with the band on Top of the Pops and other TV shows. He also directed and appeared in the video.

That woman’s got me drinking
Look at the state I’m in
Give me one, two, three, four, five,
six, seven, eight, nine, ten bottles of gin
