Roskilde Festival 2018: A Love Story about Music, Late Night Kisses, Magic & Fashion

I’ve had great loves in my life, most of them people (and a pony named Rainbow). The stars in my life are my awesome son, my crazy friends along with my lovely and sometimes a bit weird family. But sometimes also ephemeral beings can be so captivating that it feels like falling in love. And one of those beings is Roskilde Festival. The longest relationship of my life – 20 years – and still going strong!

If you’re wondering what is it about Roskilde Festival that makes my heart beat faster, folds my face into a smile and lets me forget of the world for recurring moments year-after-year… the answer is simple. It’s the magic – the magic in the music, the enchantment of people and all the LOVE blossoming day-in and day-out.

Placebo played Roskilde Festival in ‘99 and it was there that I experienced my favorite band in the world for the first time. I have seen them 10 times since. Today I have one of their song lyrics tattooed on my arm – crazy boy band lady alert, I know – but definitely worth it! The same year I saw Placebo, one of my best friends met a cute guy at the festival and now they are married. Last year I fell in love at Roskilde Festival. Fell in love hard – butterflies, rainbows, unicorns and all. Am I still in love with the lucky bastard? No, but ‘we’ll always have Roskilde’ and that’s the magic.

To share this year’s festival with you, I set out to talk to people that caught my eye in different tones  – I was struck with their personality, with a smile, with a look, with kindness or with what they were wearing. Talk to them about their magic. What is their love story of music, late night kisses and fashion?

What are you wearing?

“Red bandana, old t-shirt from a Rust (legendary nightclub in Copenhagen) x ADIDAS collab from DISTORTION (street festival in Copenhagen) some years ago. Jeans from a thrift store, DIY jewellery and boots from Gardenia. I only buy and wear vintage clothes.”

What is your best festival fashion tip?

“This year, with all the dust, a bandana to block it out. And a classic – layers! Always layer up!”

What are looking forward to the most at this year?

“I am show day PR at Apollo Stage, so it has been the new system from Meyer Sound! The frequencies go so deep that you won’t hear it but rather feel it. That and watching what I’ve been working on for months being realized with my crew.”

Which artist playing this year would you recommend?

Blonde Redhead – It’s a sum of treasured memories. Joey Bada$$. The live show is gonna be insane and Tonga Balloon at Apollo stage – gonna be the best party of the festival.”

Do you have a love story from Roskilde Festival that you would like to share?

“Some friends of mine got engaged during Roskilde Festival 2017 and this year they got married right before the festival. I’m working during the festival and helped plan her bachelorette party at the same time – one of the things we did was reenacting his proposal to her. I went to the ceremony at city hall straight from the festival and had her bachelorette party straight after. My gift to her was a Roskilde ticket so they went straight to the festival after! Their story is gonna be forever intertwined with my memories of Roskilde.”

What are you wearing?

“I’m wearing a dress from H&M, my favorite blue Vans shoes (although they’re dusty from the festival), I bought the sunglasses and choker-necklace at a small market in Barcelona and the bag is from ASOS.com…
Oh and of course, red lips and the Roskilde Festival wristband.”

What is your best festival fashion tip?

“Wear something you’ll feel physically comfortable in and most importantly feel good about – your confidence will shine through and that will make you look even better, no matter what you’re wearing. Also, shoes are so important at a festival. They can ruin your whole experience if they’re not up for the conditions, so find a pair you can wear and stand in for hours on end but still looks good.
Vans work for me!”

What are you looking forward to the most this year?

“There’s this buzzing excitement I get, especially in the first few days. Something good but unexpected always happens, whether it’s being with people socially or an amazing unexpected music experience – I know that by the end of the festival week I’ll have some great stories to tell and that’s what I’m most excited about.”

Which artist playing this year would you recommend?

“Definitely Anderson Paak & The Free Nationals, he’s an exceptional artist and he blows your mind. Also Bruno Mars, it’s always a huge party of a show and his voice is sickkkk and last but not least I’d recommend BCUC, an Afro-psychedelic funk music band from South Africa that absolutely and unexpectedly brought the house down at Pavilion Wednesday night after Eminem did. It was lit, to say the least.”

Do you have a love story from Roskilde that you would like to share?

“I’ve realized that for years now that many of the new friends I’ve made at Roskilde Festival have come from me getting lost from my friends I had been with. In trying to find them (stupid phone connections) I always randomly seem to end up making new ones and going on partying with the new friends for the rest of the night. I love the inclusiveness and go-with-the-flow vibe that Roskilde Festival provides – and that’s love to me!”

Roskilde is the time when the sleeping wakes to become a part of the dream. It’s in the little things, the big things and all the things in between that make our hearts bounce with happiness in different ways, when we take a break from the world and head out to a week of music, friendship and craziness – the festival is found in the relationships that bind us together. We smile and celebrate and Roskilde celebrates through us.

If you’re still wondering: Did I experience the magic this year? Without a doubt! I got to spend a week with one of my best friends, met so many lovely people, laugh my ass off, listen to amazing music and realise that I might want to marry Mos Def!

Now the magic dust has settled, and I look forward to seeing my old love again next year.
