Manchester based trio, GoGo Penguin – aka Rob Turner (drummer), Nick Blacka (double bassist) and Chris Illingworth (pianist) – have just been announced among the second wave of acts set to play Farmfestival 2016.

Based in Somerset, Farmfestival started as a party for friends and has retained its ethos 11 years on, growing organically via word of mouth – from a capacity of 400 in 2006, to an intentionally capped audience of 5,000 – and showcasing a genre-defying selection of music from emerging talents, cult heroes and local gems. There’s no inflated prices typical to the festival scene either, just inspiring arts activities and great local produce, including organic Somerset ciders and ales.

GoGo penguin are known for their trademark mash-up of minimalist piano themes, deeply propulsive bass lines and electronica-inspired drums. Their sophomore album, Man Made Object, was released just last month, and to celebrate their date at Farmfest, the band have put together their top 10 playlist for on the road, “As a band we share a love for electronic music, contemporary classical and the outer reaches of jazz. We listen to all of this and more while on the tour bus and this playlist features some of our favourite tracks to listen to while on the move, with a few bits and bobs added for listening flavour.” Check it out.

1. Nathan Fake – ‘Paean’

“Nathan is a really interesting electronic musician from Norfolk, we all love this tune.”

2. The Bad Plus – ‘Big Eater’

“The Bad Plus are a piano trio from America who mix rock, classical and mostly jazz influences. We seem to get compared to them a lot so we decided to check them out. The music is cool, but not an influence on us, whatever the critics think. Great track though.”

3. Aphex Twin – ‘Girl/Boy Song’

“Aphex however is a big influence on us all. And this is a great tune. But then they all are.”

4. Medeski Martin and Wood – ‘Your Name Is Snake Anthony’

“One of the great ‘groove’ bands and if you don’t know their music this is a pretty good place to start. A stoner’s tale set to a dubby funk groove.”

5. Shelly Manne – ‘Infinity’

“Another ‘much sampled’ drummer, this interlude is from his album Mannekind.”

6. Xploding Plastix – ‘Joy Comes In The Morning’

“Ace Norwegian duo mixing jazz, big beat and electro funk. What’s not to like?”

7. Squarepusher – ‘Do You Know Square Pusher’

“Another artist, like Aphex Twin, who we all revere and an early influence on the band’s sound.”

8. Rival Consoles – ‘Ghosting’

“We’re big fans of the Erased Tapes label and Rival Consoles take on contemporary electronic dance music always sounds fresh.”

9. Moderat – ‘Last Time (Jon Hopkins remix)’

“We all love Jon Hopkins and his remix of Moderat’s ‘Last Time’ is pretty nigh on essential listening on late night drives.”

10. Mulatu Astake & The Heliocentrics – ‘Addis Black Widow’

“Mulatu is the legendary architect of Ethiopian jazz and this track from his meeting with the Heliocentrics is essential van listening.”

GoGo Penguin’s debut album, Man Made Object, is out now via Blue Note Records.
