Feeling Christmassy yet? Bah…
If you’ve not quite embraced the Christmas tunes – and as if you can avoid them – then check out this Top 10 by Radio X‘s Phil Clifton, topped and tailed with Mariah Carey and Leona Lewis, and everything from RUN-DMC to Charles Brown in between.
XFM relaunched as Radio X just this summer, when the station was rolled out nationally. Phil joined the likes of Chris Moyles, Vernon Kay, Johnny Vaughan and Ricky Wilson from The Kaiser Chiefs as part of the new, lad-centric, line-up and can also be found presenting and DJing at major events, including The BRIT Awards, London Fashion Week, and club nights up and down the country.
Now get on this.
1. Mariah Carey – All I Want For Christmas Is You
“Such an obvious choice, I know. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m fairly certain that there is a particular division in hell which plays this song on constant repeat in May… but whenever I hear it in December then it makes be stupidly happy and festive. So there we go. Mariah 1 – Phil 0.”
2. RUN-DMC – Christmas In Hollis
“This song includes the rapped lyrics ‘I picked the wallet up then I took a pause, Took out the license and it cold said Santa Claus’. What’s not to love?”
3. Charles Brown – Please Come Home For Christmas
“This song gets me every time. I’d even take the Bon Jovi version. Although I was in a Starbucks once having just broken up with someone and they played it on loop… Nearly threw my macchiato at the wall and stormed out. Do not listen when recently single.”
4. Frightened Rabbit – It’s Christmas So We’ll Stop
“A song all about not scrapping at Christmas! Which is a fair point, well made. I love these guys.”
5. The Pogues feat. Kirsty MacColl – Fairytale Of New York
“I challenge you to find one person who does not like this song. I actually challenge you.”
6. Destiny’s Child – 8 Days of Christmas
“Whoever is buying Destiny’s Child all these presents must have a MASSIVE credit limit.”
7. Courteeners – Winter Wonderland
“A new Christmas song for 2015. And a proper stunner. We salute you, Liam Fray.”
8. My Morning Jacket – Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas
“Lovely cover of a Christmas classic.”
9. Leftover Cuties – Santa Baby
“Another cover of a Christmas classic. The odd minor tinker but follows the ‘If it ain’t broke…’ rule quite nicely I’d say.”
10. Leona Lewis – One More Sleep
“YES, Leona! SUCH a Christmas tune, could easy compete with Carey. She is beyond due a big comeback.”
