Ask the DJ: Segiri – Top 10 Tracks from Women of Pop That Have Inspired Me Over the Years

Synth-pop newcomer, Segiri released her debut single ‘Chances’ earlier this year, drawing on a myriad of influences ranging from pop, soul to R&B. Her music is laced with lively, high spirited songwriting alongside emotive pop melodies.

“The producer and I had so much fun putting this track together. We were in the studio playing around with a bunch of different vibes but as soon as he played me the beginning of this one I knew that was the one! The song is really playful and full of attitude…it sums up my personality well!”

Inspired by everything from South Indian film music to Beyoncé and Amerie, Segiri has experimented with many different styles, fusing Indian rhythm with singing scales and Pop/R&B infused beats from the UK and US. Check out her top 10 tracks from women of pop that have inspired her over the years.

1. Britney Spears – ‘Toxic’

“I love this song and the music video too. The video was actually a big inspiration for the music video for my debut track ‘Chances’ – we wanted something sexy yet dangerous. I think this is one of the biggest pop hits of all time.”

2. Beyonce – ‘Crazy In Love (feat. JAY-Z)’

“I grew up in India and there weren’t that many TV channels that played English music when I was growing up. I remember you could write in and request a track to be played and this is one of the first tracks I requested be played on the MTV show.”

3. P!nk – ‘Stupid Girls’

“I know this is not strictly pop but it had to make my list. This is one of those tracks that will make you laugh every time you listen. The humour is really tongue in cheek, the tune is super catchy and the message is a great one.”

4. Lady Gaga – ‘Poker Face’

“I love the beat and the vibe. The opening scene of the video with Gaga and the mask is just a work of art- it hooks you instantly.”

5. Katy Perry – ‘E.T. (feat. Kanye West)’

“I absolutely love the beat of the music – it’s almost hypnotizing and it has a great hook. The video is really out there – it’s the kind of video I still can’t decide if I actually like or not… but I can’t stop watching it!”

6. Rihanna – ‘Umbrella (feat. JAY-Z)’

“It’s such a simple concept, which is what I love about it. Rihanna also looks amazing in the video. It’s also just a really empowering song- evoking the idea of a woman’s natural instinct of protection.”

7. Shakira – ‘Hips Don’t Lie (feat. Wyclef Jean)’

“I couldn’t leave this one out! I used to try and do the dance in front of the TV when I was younger. You can’t help but dance when you hear this tune!!”

8. Taylor Swift – ‘Style’

“The video is simple but mesmerizing – it’s literally smoke and mirrors which I though was really cool.”

9. Camila Cabello – ‘Never Be The Same’

“The vocals are amazing on this track- Camila makes them sound so effortless as well. I love how the video is sexy and quirky at the same time.”

10. Halsey – ‘Bad At Love’

“Halsey has such a great look in this video. I had this song on loop for a very LONG time! The track is seductive and emotional, and I don’t think there’s anything else out there like it.”
