Introducing the stirring talent of Glaswegian singer-songwriter, Christy, who has just released his debut single ‘On My Mind’. An homage to Jeff Buckley’s ‘Mama, You Been On My Mind’, the song was written about the process of moving on from a past loved one, unable to block the thought of them as he tries to forgive himself for bringing it to an end.
Featuring a gorgeous, rustic sounding acoustic guitar, which Christy uses to provide the rhythmic backbone to the song, tapping and slapping the instrument as it moves through surprising chord changes, the song is centred around Christy’s equally rustic yet expertly controlled, dynamic and emotive vocals, reminiscent of the likes of Paolo Nutini. There’s an earthy nature to the song amongst the sparse, resonating bass drum and interlacing cello and violin textures, which we’re captivated by.
“‘On My Mind’ is a note to an old lover. Almost as a process of moving on for myself by finally being able to forgive myself for a situation but also letting her know that I will always think of her.”
“‘On My Mind’ is a note to an old lover,” says Christy. “Almost as a process of moving on for myself by finally being able to forgive myself for a situation but also letting her know that I will always think of her.”
Christy started his journey busking on the streets of Glasgow, honing his craft as a performer and songwriter. He explains that he found his voice on Glasgow’s famous Buchanan Street as a teenager. He’d always wanted to sound like Jeff Buckley, imitating him in the shower as a child, but in front of the crowds of onlookers as a street musician he learned to let his feelings run wild. “Singing is basically letting out your emotions in a weird wail,” he said. “And after all the busking, I know a good wail from a bad one.”
At twenty-four, he’s already lived out several unlikely dreams. A member of a boy band, an actor in a Disney TV series, and even climbing Arthur’s Seat with one of his idols, Rufus Wainwright. But beneath the young Glaswegian’s many incarnations is a serious musician about to unleash his first EP. Though intensely personal, this is not simple, singer-songwriter territory: the effervescent O’Donnell counts Ray Charles, John Martyn and Chet Baker as among his biggest musical influences. ‘On My Mind’ is an intriguing taster of what’s to come. With his debut EP lined up for release, we can’t wait to see where Christy takes us next.
