Alt-pop newcomer, OLI grew up listening to the likes of Pink Floyd and Sade – a musical background that’s proved to be a positive influence on her new single ‘Happy’. This latest track differs in topic to OLI’s traditional songwriting inspiration; while the 23-year-old Londoner usually creates songs from observational or fictional scenarios, here we see a vulnerability and openness to OLI’s music.

“I wrote it about a family member who was really stressed and really overwhelmed. No matter what I said to them, it didn’t matter, they were in their own little world of anxiety. All I could offer were words of encouragement.”

“I wrote it about a family member who was really stressed and really overwhelmed,” says OLI, sharing her inspiration for the track. “No matter what I said to them, it didn’t matter, they were in their own little world of anxiety. All I could offer were words of encouragement;” a mindset that many can relate to. Lyrics such as “feel like you could be so much more” and “why are you doing this again?” are touching pleas for her loved one to relieve themselves of their hardship.

While the verses describe these difficulties, the chorus hits us with a wall of enlightening sounds and open synth chords, as OLI’s artistry pleads for happiness and removes any negative mindset. Subtle production touches of intermittent piano and saxophone licks add classical touches to the pop vocals and ambient synth lines that sprinkle magic throughout the track.

Despite OLI’s initial feeling of helplessness towards her family members despair, ‘Happy’ has proven her musicality and artistry to be a perfect antidote to mental difficulties, while the music video captures a nostalgic atmosphere with vibrant summer visuals that evoke a positive mood.

The track heralds the release of OLI’s upcoming EP, which involves high profile collaborations from Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan and well-known hit maker Benny D. Having already played the Isle of Wight Festival in 2018, OLI is now set to take her sound into a live show environment, and reveal more new music throughout 2020.

‘Happy’ is out now.
